Aha.  And apparently it affects only the process whose window is
receiving input at the moment I type Alt-Shift.  Otherwise, restarting
Emacs would not have helped.

Elementary.  But since I didn't know about that Alt-Shift peculiarity, I
would not have known about its cure either ...
