I only recently remembered this thread, but I would still be interested
in a way to resolve the problem discussed here.

This is quite an interesting take, and it might work. However, this
depends on a variant of “fill-paragraph” that works with a proportional
font (i.e. variable-pitch-mode), especially with regard to a non-nil
“JUSTIFY” argument. Does such a variant of “fill-paragraph” exist?
