I have pretty much what you have:

#+begin_src emacs-lisp
  (add-to-list 'load-path "~/git/org-mode/lisp")
  (add-to-list 'load-path "~/git/org-mode/contrib/lisp/")
  (require 'org)
#+end_src

and this works fine.  These lines come before anything that may
reference org in any way, mind you.
