Another option is to have a new set of keywords:
#+LATEX_AUTHOR: <author with formatting goes here>
#+HTML_AUTHOR: ...
For multiple authors, we may introduce something like
#+AUTHOR: John Doe
#+AUTHOR+: Luke Skywalker
That should be fully backwards-compatible.
