Make all the messages look the same. Remove the curled braces, and add these
only in the Tcl interface, as they are not required for Python. Probably also
get rid of the numbers, as the codes are not really unique anymore.

Comment by olenz: given that we are using C++ now, maybe we want to use
exceptions?
