The latter is partly related to how ZigZag is locally euclidian and perhaps hence creates such sense of space, but RDF (which Fenfire uses) is different. this elaborated a bit later here.

the straightforward way of navigating in an 'infite' virtual space is to simply be able to recenter the display and zoom in/out. then you can simply furnish the user with a magic wand that he/she can jump out of a place and into an other. this is easy enough for mr and mrs everybody to get into. the goal in designing ui should be 'no need for instructions - least amount of background knowledge required' .

hope this wasn't self evident :)
