Dan, you should be able to do a local install of Python 2.3 into /usr/ 
local (not via the package system, but manually), and then use that  
python to do a manul install of Zope 2.8 into /usr/local as well. This  
would actually be a recommended way to do it in a production server  
anyway, because then you have full control over the software  
components of your service, including the ability to customize or  
patch them if the need arises. And this way these older versions of  
software won't affect the normal operation of your linux box.
