Hey Dave,

Hmmm.  I'm not entirely sure what the problem may be.  RH5 vs RH6
incompatability is a reasonable guess.

If you download the tar.gz and instead do

rpmbuild -ta freeipmi-1.0.7.tar.gz

does that work for you?
