(Not official) some of the freetype gsoc ideas are fairly long-term, and if it isn't done yet, then it is available. Specifically, I am not aware of any build system changes in the past 12 months.

You are welcomed to come up with your project ideas, not necessarily need to be on any official lists.

What's wrong with the mailing list archive which isn't "where contributors can discuss project ideas and collaborate effectively"? It is threaded, searchable, and it goes back for decades. FreeType 2 itself is about 2 decades old, with another decade before that, for FreeType 1... Discord and Slack are at most about a decade old, I think. FreeType 2 is also older than github/gitlab and older than git (the tool) itself by quite a lot, so you probably will find that freetype development does not quite follow the pull/merge requests model popularised by github/gitlab either...

You can confirm definitively that a gsoc 2023 idea wasn't taken up by browsing or searching through the mailing list archive.

Hello everyone,

I'm Nitish, a computer science student from India. I'm eager to contribute to FreeType for Google Summer of Code 2024, and I have a few questions.

As I was exploring the idea list, I noticed that the build system project was listed as an idea for GSoC 23. I'm interested in this project, but I'm uncertain if the ideas listed on https://freetype.org/gsoc.html are intended for GSoC 24. At the top of the page, it states, "The FreeType project participates in Google Summer of Code 2023. Here is our list of possible projects." If these ideas are not for GSoC 24, could you please direct me to where I can find the ideas for GSoC 24?

Additionally, I'm curious if there are any communication channels like Discord or Slack available for FreeType, where contributors can discuss project ideas and collaborate effectively.

Thank you for your assistance.
