I haven't done anything with OpenType fonts, but I believe that if the
Type 1 font is packaged in OpenType format, the SFont table should be
there.  (Check Microsoft or Adobe's OpenType documentation.)

If your opening a good old Type 1 font directly with FreeType, I have no
idea.
