[Freetype] Kerning with Type1 Fonts

I'm having a problem with kerning and the Type1 fonts included with Adobe 
Acrobat for Linux.  I'm loading the AFM file with FT_Attach_File, but 
FT_HAS_KERNING still returns false.   The AFM files appear to contain 
kerning tables:

StartKernData
StartKernPairs 998
KPX A C -30
KPX A Ccedilla -29
KPX A G -31
....
KPX zero one 12
KPX zero seven 7
EndKernPairs
EndKernData

The kerning works with TT fonts, and I'm using FreeType 2.0.4.  I appreciate 
any help/tips anyone can give.
