Problem solved!
First, I disagree: I have tried it on various monitors and the
screenshot looks indeed bad. You have to look at the screenshot in 100%
zoom. Then you should be able to notice the font problems even on your
CRT :)
Anyway, I have just solved the problem by enabling the bytecode
interpreter! The fonts now look perfect (just like in M$ Windows). So
the new Auto-Hinter doesn't work with the high resolution, at least not
on my Thinkpad's LCD (which is really good, even above the native
resolution).

You will get distorted fonts in all resolutions other than 1024x768
(native resolution of 15" LCD). This is the feature of LCD, not the bug
in FreeType (your screenshot looks fine on my CRT).
