[Freetype] correctly displaying un-AA truetype fonts in PHP

hello, guys!

could you please point me to the correct direction:

im trying to display a simple text with Arial truetype font (from M$)
using freetype 2.1.9 + gd 2.0.28 + php 4.3.9dev (20040810snapshot), but
it will look terribly ugly at small sizes.

i already tried ftoption.h with no succes.

im not really sure if this is really a freetype issue, but i seem to be
totally lost :(

any help would be greatly appreciated! (even just a key-word :)
