I grabbed those files, and can report that of the 59 build attempts on
about 20 flavors of Unix, 53 succeeded, and reported 

        There is no validation suite for this package.

from the "make check" step.  

The 6 failures seem to be due to just two problems, one of them the
inability to find the libfreetype.so library (5 builds), and the other
the passing of incorrect flags to the compiler (1 build).

I'll send the logs to Werner off list.
