Have you read the comment in the header file?

  /* Do not use this function directly!  Copy the code to */
  /* your application and modify it to suit your need.    */

:-)  The emboldening can be controlled in the function FT_Outline_Embolden.

What do you mean with `more sharp'?  Note that FreeType doesn't handle
the `gasp' table.
