I wonder whether we should do the same for non-TrueType fonts. I think yes, but please comment!
Are there any known TTF fonts where the hinting is impacted (positively or negatively) by this change? I had a version of Inconsolata Bold that looked like crap after this change, but it turns out it was a known hinting issue that was fixed in a more recent version of it.
