Quick question: do you mean patent or copyright? In fact, I can see how
both could be true (assuming some hardware DRM systems get patented), but I
think copyright is the bigger concern.

Careful: some "open source" products are not developable by people outside
the copyright holders' employ (unless you mean OSI OSD Open Source). I
strongly suggest using the less ambiguous terms "free software" or "copyleft
software," depending on what you really mean.
To your main point: is anyone able to contribute a good logical statement on
how this will represent a clear economic damage to the UK? My thinking is
very muddled at the moment, I'm afraid.
