Thanks to those who have already responded. The more the better. It
might be helpful to know that the E-envoy says this
4.3.4 Microsoft Word (.DOC)
Documents can also be saved in Microsoft Word format. A range of free
Word readers is available from Microsoft. This is the least desirable
format as it is proprietary and it cannot be guaranteed that a reader
exists for a particular user’s computer.

I haven't used this reference so please feel free to do so.
Someone might also like to point out that if they use OpenOffice.org
they can save directly as a pdf file.
