I have a question...

How dependent is GCL upon using IEEE floats?

Here's why I'm asking...

The OpenVMS DEC C compiler by default dosen't use IEEE floats and one has
to tell it to use IEEE float mode
(using /FLOAT=IEEE_FLOAT/IEEE_MODE=DENORM_RETULTS). The problem is that
only the Alpha platform supports IEEE floats and not the VAX platform.

If GCL isn't dependent on IEEE float mode then it should run on the VAX
platform once I get the Alpha port going giving GCL another platform
(and I've had many VAX people asking about GCL for VAX).

Right now to be safe I'm compiling with IEEE float mode on OpenVMS Alpha
but would like to know if it's really necessary or not.
