0) I've committed a few cleanups for you -- would like the build to
   put nothing on stderr unless it aborts.

1) Does this mean you got a working build this time?

2) Could you please tell me why the tk detection fails after tclsh is
   found:

        application-specific initialization failed: Can't find a
    usable init.tcl in the following directories: /usr
    /local/lib/tcl8.0 /usr/local/lib/tcl8.0 /usr/tcl8.0/library
    /usr/local/library

3) I cannot find the source of this error:
        /bin/sh: !: not found

4) What should we do if makeinfo is not found?  Abort?  No docs?
        make[1]: makeinfo: Command not found

Please try to build maxima-5.6 when you can and report the results!
