Well, the tcl/tk gui certainly works on Linux x86 as manifested in
xmaxima, at least.

I'd do a backtrace in gdb at the offending line in write1, which
appears to be comm.c:222, and find out where the write1 is called
from, and who setup the file descriptor.  My guess is that there is an
open or socket call somewhere that is not adequately verified.
