Greetings!  Thanks for the references, and for writing the references! 

GCL's configure runs several subconfigures in subdirectories.  This is
the first point of failure when attempting to build in a different
directory.  There must be some autoconf variable specifying the source
directory, but I cannot find it.  Currently, configure.in just does cd
<dir> && ./configure, which obviously won't work.

Any insight appreciated.
