Strange, GCL source tree which I can get by
  cvs checkout -r Version_2_5_4 gcl
or
  cvs update -r Version_2_5_4
is different from one obtained by applying
your patch to gcl-2.5.3.tar.gz.
Am I doing something stupid?

The checkout tree can't be build due to
error on the configure stage.
Patched gcl-2.5.3.tar.gz works
fine on all tests but release number
is still 2.5.3.
