Greetings!  We are on the leave of a new stable release, 2.6.2.  The
documentation building has been updated, and no longer uses texi2html.
Until the final 2.6.2 tarball is put onto ftp.gnu.org, please try with

export CVS_RSH=ssh
cvs -d:ext:address@hidden:/cvsroot/gcl co -r Version_2_6_1
-d gcl-2.6.1 gcl
