I suppose it is just the build process that wont find it.
Try "ldconfig" as root. ldconfig creates the necessary links
and cache to the most recent shared libraries.

Of course, things would be MUCH, much easier for people like me (end user with no desire to fight the build utils/environment) if the Gnome-commander web page listed/linked to RPMs for popular distros...

Yes that would be easier, but it is not that easy to find,
and it means maintenance to keep it up to date. Try one of
those RPM-search engines.

So far, the download page at
http://www.nongnu.org/gcmd/download.html#distro
Lists "Fedora packages" wich links to
http://gcmd.iskip.host247.pl/

...which only offers RPMs for FC5...

You do not have to install a version exaktly for your version,
it could go just as well with an rpm for Mandriva, as long as
it is compiled for the same HW architecture. You could even use
Slackware package from Freerock gnome (they are just tarballs,
just like RPMs) and unpack it in your home directory.
Gnome-commander runs just fine without a system install, just
unpacked with its file tree in any folder.
