I have gc 1.2.7 installed from the Ubuntu 9.04 repositories. I am
running the 64 bit version. I want to upgrade to see if some of the
bugs disappear.

I downloaded the 1.2.8 update file. Ran ./configure and found that I
needed to also install gettext first. No problem. Ran ./configure
again and the last line then ends with “configure: error: no” so I guess
all is well.

However when I run make as a user, an administrator or root I get the
following

“make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop. ”

and make check delivers the following

“make: *** No rule to make target `check'. Stop. ”

Since I have followed the install instructions I was wondering what I
have overlooked here? Is this something due to running the 64 bit
version of Ubuntu?
