That's actually what you should see. The term "dialog box" was
misleading. It's rather an input box without window manager decorations
and placed in front of the gcmd main window.

Thanks. As Didster could not reproduce this bug, gtk+ is therefore not
responsible here, I guess. But I don't have any clue now what you could
do.

Perhaps there are some problems in any configuration files for your user
account? You could try to set up a new user on your notebook machine and
try renaming in gcmd with that user account.

Could it be a window manager configuration for focus to follow mouse without 
clicking? In that case, the rename 'window' would get immediately dismissed I 
suppose‎
