it is known that Gcmd has some problems when connecting to other servers
via FTP. The reason for this might be that it is partially using
deprecated libraries like gnome-fvs for establishing those connections.
Currently, I won't find the time to investigate this problem further.

Are you trying to connect to a public or a anonymous ftp-server? In the
second case you might manually remove the currently set up connections
by closing Gcmd, moving '~/.gnome-commander/gnome-commander.xml' to
somewhere else and starting gcmd again. Then, start Gcmd again and setup
your FTP connection again. This might help. If not, close Gcmd again and
restore the original xml-file.

You should also have a look for the version of gnome-fvs on your system.
It should be at least > v2.24.
