RJ, very nice proposal. 

I agree that this is a different project than a management REST API, but
it is possible that these two projects could merge one day (e.g., GUI
interface), so it is possibly a good idea to at least see what each
other are doing...

I'm working on the python bindings for libgfapi
(https://github.com/gluster/libgfapi-python), so let me know if I can
help with questions.

Also, this might be a bit of a stretch, but gluster-swift is a "plugin"
for using Gluster as the backend storage for Openstack Swift. It is
object-storage, so it might not apply to what your are trying to do, but
it might provide some ideas, so I'd say it's worth taking a look...
