the AM_CHECK_LIB macro expects the second argument to be a library
function that takes no arguments. If so, then glEnd maybe a better
choice than glBegin. It works OK on my machine though.
The second arg is a function that must exist in the library. I'd think
either will work.
That's what I hoped, as I thought it would be a little bit inflexible to
expect every library to have a function that takes no arguments. (I've
now got hold of the online version of the Autoconf book, so the black
art of writing configure scripts is becoming much clearer).
I've amended the paths that the tests will check to include /usr/pkg,
which is where the Mesa libraries often live on NetBSD machines.
Cool, that path will need to be added to the directory list for all
the macros I'd think. Anyway, can I get the full file instead of just a
diff ? I'm feeling lazy... :-)

I've attached the full file. I can send you patches for the other macro
files over the next few days.
Once there's a release of Gnash with a working plugin, I'd like to add
an entry for it to pkgsrc-wip. This is the staging ground for pkgsrc, a
framework that manages the installation of third party applications on
NetBSD. It also works on a number of other free or commercial Unix
variants (DragonflyBSD recently adopted it as their official package
management system).
