You can use Gutsy with 192MB, although 256MB is the minimum and 320MB recommended. I managed it on a relatively new laptop with 192MB. The solution is to use a live CD to create a swap partition first. Then the live CD will run the installer.
The growing need for RAM poses a problem for small systems without harddisks though, because you don't want swap on flash memory. OTOH, there are now small systems using flash disks with 512MB RAM.
