Launch `alsamixer' and press `m' key to switch mute mode off (a `MM' appears for the selected channel when mute is on, `00' otherwise), particularily for `PCM' channel.aptitude install alsa-base alsamixer (put volume up in relevant names, such as Master and PCM)
