Hello gino and all
I have xfce4 desktop working reasonably well with the epiphany Web
browser (with the 'missing icons' problem).
I installed the command line system as you did. I got an internet
connection (in my case using a temporary entry for my wifi in
/etc/network/interfaces as per the Debian Wiki networking page, but you
might be able to use a wired connection)
Then I logged in, became root, and installed these packages
network-manager-gnome lightdm xfce4 xfce4-goodies epiphany-browser
(then I removed the lines from /etc/network/interfaces and uncommented
the original lines) and rebooted.
I could not install gnome or gnome-core, errors mentioned iceweasel
dependency.
I did not try KDE.
All works fine. Wonderful work.
