This it the way I understood it as well.

Hmm... I'm neither author of this part of the core nor irda expert, so I
can tell you what I can read from the source. It is done using
IrDA sockets (AF_IRDA). The follwing code may tell you something:
peer.sir_family = AF_IRDA;
peer.sir_lsap_sel = LSAP_ANY;
peer.sir_addr = daddr;
strcpy(peer.sir_name, "Nokia:PhoNet");
