speed sending and receiving SMS (5130)

I'm writing a little perl program that runs as a daemon polling for SMS
to send and looking for incoming messages. I'm using the perl qx{} call
to call gnokii.

Its working fine, but I find that on a looping send I cannot get SMS out
quicker 1 every 18 seconds. A lot of this time appears to be taken up
with a disconnect from the phone, because the recipient often receives
the message before gnokii has disconnected.

Is there a way of getting and sending SMS quicker, on this or another
phone to the 5130?
