use iRDA on mainboard ?

hi  all
i hve a nokia 3310 :) and no data cable :(
from what i understand of the data cable ... its basically a mateter of 3v
signals to the phone  ...
so ... what if i use the irda port on my
mainboard and similar signal conditioniong to build a data _cable_ ?
are there any issues i should be considering  ? have been to
pannuworld.net/nuukiaworld ...
a ny commnets / suggestions on the sanity of a project like this

p.s. where i live (goa) ... i can't get hold of any MAX232 or MAX3232 ICs
hence this bizarre idea !!
