The communication in general seems slow.
Quicks spurts of data interrupted by retries with xgnokii when it is
polling for power level and battery status.
Running 'gnokii --getphonebook ME 1 100' runs well and quickly.

Use_locking is set to no, but I have no other serial port programs
running.
