According to gsm-error.h is return code 8 GN_ERR_UNKNOWN /* Unknown error -
well better than nothing!! */.

I don't know how this mean, maybe was your phone to busy. Perhaps adding some
sleeps between sms downloading will help.

If smsd gets an error it tries to repeat action.
