My GPRS script has also:
ATE1
AT+CBST=51,0,1
AT+CHSN=6,0,0,0

Try to connect to the phone with minicom and issue "AT". The phone
should answer "OK". Try also to change serial port settings inside
minicom. Does gnokii with model = "AT" work?
