Have you solved yor problem?
I have the same experience with Nokia 5xxx series phones. After a period of 
time connected to the charger the phone hangs. I'm using it for network 
monitoring and for an SMS box with cca 150 - 200 SMSes per day. My current 
solution: I have to disconnect it and take off the batteries.

Nowadays the 5110 is well out of its life. For some years now I have seen
only the same (presumably latest) version of firmware.
