For what it's worth.

I've learned today that gammu has the functionality I was asking about
in my previous two posts.

Obviously what I thought were memory pointers were more some record for
the file's number in the filesystem.

My commandline for getting the picture for a contact called contactname
became:

gammu --getfiles $[ `gammu --searchmemory "contactname"|grep "Picture ID"|awk 
'{ print $4 }'` - 1]|awk '$1=="Saving"{print $3}'
