Finding how many SMS messages

Is there a way of determining how many 
SMS/ME and SMS/SM messages there are?
On my Sony Ericsson T630 gnokii seems to hang
if I try to read many messages past the last message.

Also, "gnokii --deletesms ME 1 30" did not seem to work
on this phone.
Is that just a consequence of using this phone,
or is there something wrong with the command?
