Thanks for the reply and I am happy to learn that my phone has a real modem. 
However, I did try to point minicom directly at ttyUSB0 before I tried 
gnokiid and it didn't appear to work. It looked as though garbage was being 
sent to and from the phone. When I got an OK back from gnokiid I figured 
that was the way to go. 

So you are saying I should be using ttyUSB0 directly, yes? I guess I will 
try it again and play with some of the other settings. Perhaps I shouldn't 
be using 8N1? Any further help getting it to work would be greatly 
appreciated. I forgot to mention in my last message that it uses a DLR-2 
cable. 

Also, should I be using AT for the model? Perhaps the 9290 is using the 
phone guts of some other model that is supported directly?
