chances are that you do not want to use gnokiid: it is for OLD phones that do not support AT commands natively
if you want to send AT commands to the phone, then open the port directly and do not use libgnokii: the user will decide if he needs to use gnokiid or buy a new phone :-)
but if you want to use libgnokii, which I recommend, you don't need to worry about AT commands and you just use the interface provided by the library, e.g. via gn_sm_functions()
