Would you mind upgrading your Linux? You simply may need a newer GCC + ton of new tools for Gnokii to compile.
I'd be glad to test that on RH9, but it seems that I discarded my last installation media 5 years ago. In case you have an old computer and are low on processing power and/or hard disk space, there are excellent distros for 486 and low end pentiums, which have the required modern tools.
