It's worth checking for sure, I have a udev rule that makes the device 
accessible to anyone in the 'wheel' group, and the user is in this group:

$ ls -l /dev/ttyACM0
crw-rw---- 1 root wheel 166, 0 Dec 17 11:16 /dev/ttyACM0

$ id
uid=1000(postgres) gid=407(dba) groups=10(wheel),407(dba)

(can successfully run 'more' on the device, so I'm pretty sure 
permissions are not the problem).
