Set Phone Settings without Config File

hi,

i am very new on gnokii, is it possible to set the config settings like

connection type, port, model...

without a configfile? can i set this on initialisation of 
gn_lib_phoneprofile_load() ?

i found gn_cfg_memory_read() but this function is DEPRECATED.
