this is way too old and unsupported
after you solve this problem you should compile the latest version
from sources, see http://www.gnokii.org/git.shtml and read the usual
INSTALL file

one possible cause of that kind of timeout is a wrong port setting
first try with a terminal program (eg minicom): type AT and press
enter, if you get OK then you can quit the terminal and try gnokii, if
not check if the modem is on /dev/ttyS1
