Hi Daniele, Pawel:
I downloaded the 0.6.31 package from teh "PPA for pkot" at
https://launchpad.net/~gnokii/+archive/ppa/+package
./configure ran just fine.
However, make did not end with the usual instruction to type "make
install", but instead ended up like this:
mv -f .deps/lowlevel.Tpo .deps/lowlevel.Po
/bin/bash ../libtool --tag=CC --mode=link gcc -I../include -I./
-I/usr/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include
-DMODULES_DIR=\"/usr/local/lib/smsd\"
-DLOCALEDIR=\"/usr/local/share/locale\" -pthread -g -O2 -Wall
-Wno-pointer-sign -fvisibility=hidden -fno-strict-aliasing -o smsd
smsd.o lowlevel.o -lglib-2.0 -Wl,--export-dynamic -lgmodule-2.0 -ldl
-lglib-2.0 -pthread ../common/libgnokii.la
libtool: link: gcc -I../include -I./ -I/usr/include/glib-2.0
-I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include -DMODULES_DIR=\"/usr/local/lib/smsd\"
-DLOCALEDIR=\"/usr/local/share/locale\" -pthread -g -O2 -Wall
-Wno-pointer-sign -fvisibility=hidden -fno-strict-aliasing -o .libs/smsd
smsd.o lowlevel.o -Wl,--export-dynamic -pthread
/usr/lib/libgmodule-2.0.so -ldl /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so
../common/.libs/libgnokii.so -pthread
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/obetv/gnokii/gnokii-0.6.31/smsd'
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/obetv/gnokii/gnokii-0.6.31'
make[1]: Nothing to be done for `all-am'.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/obetv/gnokii/gnokii-0.6.31'
And if I type "make install" at this point, I get this error message:
mv -f .deps/lowlevel.Tpo .deps/lowlevel.Po
/bin/bash ../libtool --tag=CC --mode=link gcc -I../include -I./
-I/usr/include/glib-2.0 -I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include
-DMODULES_DIR=\"/usr/local/lib/smsd\"
-DLOCALEDIR=\"/usr/local/share/locale\" -pthread -g -O2 -Wall
-Wno-pointer-sign -fvisibility=hidden -fno-strict-aliasing -o smsd
smsd.o lowlevel.o -lglib-2.0 -Wl,--export-dynamic -lgmodule-2.0 -ldl
-lglib-2.0 -pthread ../common/libgnokii.la
libtool: link: gcc -I../include -I./ -I/usr/include/glib-2.0
-I/usr/lib/glib-2.0/include -DMODULES_DIR=\"/usr/local/lib/smsd\"
-DLOCALEDIR=\"/usr/local/share/locale\" -pthread -g -O2 -Wall
-Wno-pointer-sign -fvisibility=hidden -fno-strict-aliasing -o .libs/smsd
smsd.o lowlevel.o -Wl,--export-dynamic -pthread
/usr/lib/libgmodule-2.0.so -ldl /usr/lib/libglib-2.0.so
../common/.libs/libgnokii.so -pthread
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/obetv/gnokii/gnokii-0.6.31/smsd'
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/obetv/gnokii/gnokii-0.6.31'
make[1]: Nothing to be done for `all-am'.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/obetv/gnokii/gnokii-0.6.31'
Thanks in advance for any suggestions,
Roberto

I downloaded gnokii 0.6.29
that's one year old, compile the git version instead (see
www.gnokii.org): there are many improvements including a better
depedency check at configure time and better support for your phone
