[Gnoppix-devel] GTK2-based Gnoppix Installer

Hello all,

I'm new to this list so I'll introduce myself: My name is Samuel Abels
and I've done several open source projects before. I've recently had a
look at the Gnoppix sources and figured that you still need a GUI
HD-installer ;-). This morning, I've already had a discussion with
"godsmacker" at #gnoppix and here's some of the conclusions that we've
come to:

* A GUI installer should be implemented using Perl.
* It should be GTK2-based.
* Implementation using the perl libglade wrappers (GladeXML).
* I18N support should be implemented by having a single XML file
containing all supported languages (UTF-8).
* First of all, only a text based perl implementation should be made.
That is actually a point that, after reviewing the code, I would
discourage to do now. There's just not a lot backend in the installation
routines, so I believe that there would be a lot of redundancy which is
not actually necessary. That's why I have, in fact, already started
implementing the GUI. Which leads me to the fact that...

* There's already some code written (which i did today). I'm currently
implementing a partition editor.
For those who are interested, I've already done some screenshots:

* Moving forward with that, if others are willing to help (or even if
not ;) ), that code should be checked into CVS somewhere. -> A new CVS
module would probably make sense, otherwise I'd have to open up a whole
new project, which would IMHO be nonsense.
Do you guys have policies of who will and who won't get CVS access?
Either way, I'd ask for a CVS account, my savannah user name would be
"knipknap".

Ok, I'd love to see others contributing, too, so I'd really appreciate
any help, suggestions and discussions regarding that installer.

Any questions, please ask.

Thanks,
-Samuel
